Powerboat racing returns to Kankakee County for its 20th year; The Labor Day weekend event, viewable from a Kankakee River Road Park park and the Kankakee Boat Club, is expected to include 40 to 50 boats.
Kankakee County -- Organizers of a just-scheduled powerboat race in Kankakee County believe they can succeed after being rained out last year.

"This one is going to work, and will be a great event," predicted Joe Walz, event organizer.

The event is expected to have 30 to 40 racing boats, and organizers hope it will attract 5,000 spectators. The 4.5-mile race route will be on the Kankakee River south of Cobb Park, Kankakee, IL , and can be viewed by spectators at Kankakee River Road Park and Kankakee Boat Club.

It marks the 20th year, powerboat racing has been held in Kankakee since 1984.

The races will group boats by V-shape hulls or catamarans. Boat sizes will range from 26 feet to 46 feet in length. Speeds will range from 70 to 130 mph, she said. Most have a pilot and navigator.

The Labor Day weekend event includes two days of displays before the race for spectators to see boats and drivers. The Kankakee Boat Club will be the "dry pit" area where trailered boats are brought in and lifted into the water by crane. Powerboats also will be on display at the Kankakee Boat Club Marina.
